Administrative history
As early as 1923, with the École Normale, the University of Ottawa offered programs in education. In1941, courses are also offered through the Institute of Psychology. The later, became the Institute of Psychology and Education. In 1949, it is promoted to the rank of department at the School of Graduate Studies. In 1955, it became a School of Psychology and Education independent from the Faculty of Arts. In 1965, it acquired the Faculty Status. The Faculty of Education was separated from the Faculty of Psychology in 1967. Requested by the Government of Ontario in 1969, the Faculty of Education assumed the training of French-speaking teachers. It integrated in 1974, again at the request of the government, the Ottawa Teachers' College for the training of English-speaking teachers. It will take a few years to finalize the program. The Teacher Education Section of the Faculty now provides programmes in both official languages of Canada. The Faculty also offers a graduate program leading to a M.A. and Ph.D. in education.
