Histoire administrative
M. Jean-Louis Coupal est né le 27 janvier 1898, à La Prairie (Québec). Il a étudié la médecine à l'Université de Montréal où il a obtenu un diplôme en 1924. Il se rend alors au New York Post Graduate Medical School and Hospital, afin d'y étudier l'ophtalmologie, l'oto-rhino-laryngologie, la bronchoscopie et l'oesophagoscopie. Le Dr Coupal a pratiqué la médecine à Ottawa et la chirurgie à l'Hôpital général d'Ottawa en 1926. De 1938 à 1939, il a été président du personnel médical et chef du Département d'ophtalmologie et d'oto-rhi-no-laryngologie du même Hôpital. Il a été pendant vingt ans professeur d'ophtalmologie et d'oto-rhino-laryngologie à l'École des sciences infirmières et à l'École de médecine de l'Université d'Ottawa. Il était l'un des membres fondateurs du Ottawa Medical Arts Building, et a été très actif au sein de plusieurs associations médicales telles que la Société canadienne d'ophtalmologie et l'Academy of Medecine of Ottawa. Le Dr. Coupal est décédé le 9 avril 1979.
Portée et contenu
Correspondance relative à la carrière médicale du Dr Coupal, y compris son rôle comme fondateur du Département d'oto-rhino-laryngologie de l'Université. Le fonds comprend également des photographies en noir et blanc et des diapositives en couleurs (1924-1939) de l'Hôpital général d'Ottawa et des début de la carrière du Dr Coupal à cet Hôpital.

Administrative history
Jean-Louis Coupal was born on January 27, 1898, in Laprairie, Québec. He studied medicine at Université de Montréal, where he graduated in 1924. He then went to the New York Post-Graduate Medical School and Hospital to study in ophthalmology, oto-rhino-laryngology, bronchoscopy and esophagoscopy. Dr. Coupal began practising medicine in Ottawa and operating at the Ottawa General Hospital in 1926. He was president of the medical staff in 1938-1939 and Chief of the Ophthalmology and Oto-rhino-laryngology Department at the same hospital. He spent twenty years as a professor of ophthalmology and oto-rhino-laryngology at the School of Nursing and the School of Medicine of the University of Ottawa. He was a founding member of the Ottawa Medicine Arts Building and was active in numerous medical associations such as the Canadian Ophthalmological Society and the Academy of Medicine of Ottawa. Dr. Coupal died on April 9, 1979.
Scope and content
Correspondence relative to the medical career of Dr. Coupal, including his role as founder of the University's Department of oto-rhino-laryngology, the fonds also includes 8 black and white photographs and color slides (1924-1939) of the Ottawa General Hospital and Coupal's early career at the Hospital.
