Administrative history

The University of Ottawa’s Department of Public Relations and Information is created on July 26 1958, by the Administration Committee for Temporal Affairs. It is placed under the responsibility of the Office of the Rector. In 1961, it becomes the Public relations and Publicity office and is put under the Secretary General of the University. After the reorganization of the University in 1965, it is transferred back to the Office of the Rector in 1966 and becomes the Department of Public Relations, Publicity and Publications. In 1968, its name changes to Department of Public Relations and Publications, only to change again in 1969, when it once more becomes the Public Relations and Information Service. It is transferred again in 1987 and now reports to the Office of the Vice-Rector (University Relations and Development). As part the Connexions Program for the reorganization of the University, the Service becomes the Marketing and Communications Service. It is responsible for relations with the media, the production of major printed publications and the coordination of University public relations events.

Scope and content

The Fonds contains files which document the functions of the Marketing and Communications Service. It includes onomastic files, newspaper clippings, curriculum vitae, speeches and invitations. It also consist of University staff directories (1958-1987), convocation programmes (1967-1993, 2001-2004), the newsletter Gazette (1966-2009), press releases (1958-1998), timetables (2001) and sound cassettes (1973-1979, 1989). The fonds also contain an extensive collection of iconographic material relative to University personalities and activities, films, lithography, videos and sound cassettes.

Restrictions: Documents containing personal and confidential information are restricted to consultation and reproduction.

Le Fonds contient des dossiers portant sur les fonctions du Service de Marketing et des communications. Il comprend des dossiers onomastiques, des coupures de presse des curriculum vitae, des discours et des invitations Il comprend également des annuaires téléphoniques (1958-1987), des programmes de collation des grades (1967-1993, 2001-2004), le bulletin Gazette (1966-2009), des communiqués de presse (1958-1998), des horaires (2001) et des cassettes sonores (1973-1979, 1989). Le fonds renferme également une importante collection de documents iconographiques portant sur des personnalités et des événements liés à l'Université, des films, des lithographies, des vidéos et des cassettes sonores.
