Administrative history

The English Debating Society is formed in 1880 by Rev. Louis-Alphonse Nolin to introduce students to public speaking and to encourage diction and fluency. Among its activities, the Society organizes debates, readings, mock parliaments, and plays. Some of these plays are produced with the Drama Society to which the Society is linked from 1908 to 1917 under the name of Debating and Dramatic Society. In 1904, the Society enteres the intercollegiate debate and since then participates successfully in national and international tournaments. Through the years, it also initiates several projects which develop into independent organizations. Among these is the Drama Guild that starts in 1952 and English student newspaper The Fulcrum that publishes its first issue in 1942. Since 1958, it hostess to the annual high-school debating tournament.
