DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY FONDS. - - 1889-2008 - 4,66 m of textual records. - 4 multimedia documents

Reference Number: 31

Administrative history

The Faculty of Philosophy is established in 1889 following the erection of the College of Ottawa as a pontifical university. The first bachelors degree was conferred in 1891 and the first doctorate in 1892. In 1932, to comply with the new conditions imposed by Pope Pius XI on the granting of ecclesiastical diplomas in philosophy, a four-year programme, distinct from the Faculty of Arts programme, was created under the auspices of the Faculty. In 1957, the Faculty of Arts created its own Department of Philosophy. Ten years later, the Department of Philosophy was integrated in the Faculty of Philosophy which became responsible for all philosophy courses at the University. This arrangement lasted until 1978 when the Senate acted on the recommendation made by the Commission on the Revision of Teaching and Research Structures that the Faculty of Philosophy should change its status to that of a department in the Faculty of Arts.
