University of Ottawa Rowing Team - [2000-2010] -

Reference Number: 319

Administrative history

The Ottawa Rowing Club was founded in 1867 and is one of the oldest rowing clubs in Canada. Since 1898, the club owns land near the Ottawa River where it stores its boats and offers a permanent building for member meetings. In 1949, the University of Ottawa creates the Physical Education Program. Father Montpetit o.m.i., the program’s director, decides to teach rowing. The Ottawa Rowing Club accepts to contribute to the development of the rowing program by offering equipment and coaches. The rowing program was to end every year with a boat race against another university team for the P. D. Ross Cup. The first P. D. Ross Memorial Boat Race was held in 1950 on the Ottawa River against the McMaster University team. The event stopped taking place in 1954 however due to a lack of interest and the P. D. Ross Cup is used for other racing events of the Club. The rowing program at the University of Ottawa has good and bad years according to the interest and the times. The arrival of women on the team in the 1960s and 1970s strengthens the team by adding a bigger membership base. During the years 2000, the P. D. Ross Cup returns to inter-university racing. Winners of an annual race between the University of Ottawa and Carleton University on the Ottawa river bring home the P. D. Ross Cup. The University of Ottawa rowing team still trains with the collaboration and expertise of the Ottawa Rowing Club.
