Administrative history

In 2010, the Sports services decide to offer various time frames when the gymnasiums of Montpetit Hall are reserved for the staff of the University of Ottawa. But the small numbers of users leads Sport services to end this initiative. A group of staff members that had been using the gymnasiums decides to regroup informally to promote the program in order to save it. Hence A Healthy and Active Campus takes form. Its goal is to promote the tools available on campus to the staff to help them maintain a good physical and mental health. Its members are volunteers and the group has no budget. They are successful in saving the time slots to the gymnasium. Following their success, A Healthy and Active Campus becomes a network of “champions”. These are staff members willing to promote health-related initiatives throughout the campus. They are mainly supported by three services: Sports Services, Food Services and Human Resources Services. These services reserve a small portion of their budgets and promotional space to support the activities of A Healthy and Active Campus. Among them we can list: “Bike to Work Month”, the “uOttawa Walk of Two Bridges” that raises money for United Way, a running club, a walking club on the stairs of Tabaret Hall, skating on the Rideau Canal to raise funds for research in heart diseases, etc. The group manages promotion of various events, but the initiatives usually come from various volunteers on campus. Some volunteers also contributed articles on health to The Gazette of the University of Ottawa. The group communicates mainly through its website and Facebook page. In 2015, the group had 74 champions across campus.

Scope and content

This fonds is composed of printed copies of the website and Facebook pages of A Healthy and Active Campus initiative. We can also find some promotional items showing the logo of the group.
