Administrative history

On August 15th 1866, the Legislative Council of the Province of Canada votes an amendment to the act of incorporation of the College of Bytown. This grants the College a university charter. A university Senate is then created and vested with the power to grant degrees and to set the educational standards of the institution. On September 12th 1933, Bill 34 of the Province of Ontario gives the Senate its actual powers and structure. The number of members the Senate counts is increased with the passing of the University of Ottawa Act, 1965. In 1970, following proposition 69-70.163 of the Senate, the student body is allowed to elect representatives to the Senate. The first student representatives first attended a meeting of the Senate on March 23rd of 1970 and their terms officially began on April first of the same year.
