Administrative history
The Corporation of the College of Ottawa received a university charter in 1866. The Council of Administration in 1891 was made up of the Rector, the Vice-Rector, the Director of the Seminary, the Prefect of studies, the Prefect of discipline and the Procurator. Its deliberations touch on religious and disciplinary matters as well as teaching and recreation. It was also responsible for the institution's finances. The composition and the powers of the Council of Administration were modified in 1933 by the University of Ottawa Act. An enlarged council received power to appoint the employees of the institution and to establish their salary and duties. Furthermore, upon the advice of the Senate, it could establish academic units and courses of instruction for the University. In fact, aside from the powers reserved exclusively for the Chancellor, the Rector, the Senate, the Faculties and the Officers, the Council was empowered with the control and management of all the affairs and business of the University. The Council of Administration was abolished in 1965 during the restructuring of the University. The powers of the Council were handed over to the Board of Governors.
