Administrative history
Bytown College was founded in 1848 by Mgr. Joseph Bruno Guigues, and placed under the direction of the Oblates. The Maison du Collège was established on August 27, 1856, following the formal transfer of the College to the Oblates. The Conseil de la Maison was made up of the superior, called rector after 1889, and of the two assessors of the institution. It had all the authority for the management and general administration of the College that could be assigned to it according to the rules of Oblate congregations. The powers of the Conseil regarding the direction of the College and, afterwards, of the University were gradually limited by the charters and the development of University structures. The Conseil de la Maison was abolished in 1965 with the restructuring of the University.
