Administrative history
Jean-Louis Coupal was born on January 27, 1898, in Laprairie, Québec. He studied medicine at Université de Montréal, where he graduated in 1924. He then went to the New York Post-Graduate Medical School and Hospital to study in ophthalmology, oto-rhino-laryngology, bronchoscopy and esophagoscopy. Dr. Coupal began practising medicine in Ottawa and operating at the Ottawa General Hospital in 1926. He was president of the medical staff in 1938-1939 and Chief of the Ophthalmology and Oto-rhino-laryngology Department at the same hospital. He spent twenty years as a professor of ophthalmology and oto-rhino-laryngology at the School of Nursing and the School of Medicine of the University of Ottawa. He was a founding member of the Ottawa Medicine Arts Building and was active in numerous medical associations such as the Canadian Ophthalmological Society and the Academy of Medicine of Ottawa. Dr. Coupal died on April 9, 1979.
Scope and content
Correspondence relative to the medical career of Dr. Coupal, including his role as founder of the University's Department of oto-rhino-laryngology, the fonds also includes 8 black and white photographs and color slides (1924-1939) of the Ottawa General Hospital and Coupal's early career at the Hospital.
