Administrative history

In 1959, the Faculty of Arts creates a "language laboratory" to teach foreign languages to students. In 1967, the Department of Modern Languages is established. In 1968, it becomes the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics and later, that same year, changes its name to the Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages. It is in 1976 that it takes the name Department of Linguistics. Since 1970, the Department offers a graduate programme leading to a M.A. and Ph.D. in Linguistics. It has a close affiliation with the School of Translators and Interpreters and the Centre for Second Language Learning. The Department of Linguistics explores the structure of Language and the role of language in human affairs.

Scope and content

The fonds contain files which document the functions of the Department of Linguistics. It includes minutes: departmental council (1969-1989), Executive Committee (1969-1974), General Assembly (1968-1974), Teaching Staff Committee (1974-1976), Committees of the sections: English, German, Spanish and French. It contains departmental annual reports (1967-1993), annual reports of the teachers (1986, 1990-1994), student guides (1968-1969, 1971-1983) and the Cahiers Linguistiques d'Ottawa (1971-1980). Photographs relative to the teaching of French as a second language at the Ghana Secondary Technical School can also be found.

Le fonds contient des dossiers portant sur les fonctions du Département de linguistique. Il comprend des procès-verbaux : du Conseil du département (1969-1989), du Comité exécutif du département (1969-1974), de l'Assemblée générale (1968-1974), du Comité du personnel enseignant (1974-1976), du Comités des sections : anglais, allemand, espagnol et français. Il comprend également des rapports annuels du Département (1967-1993), des rapports annuels des professeurs (1986, 1990-1994), des guides de l'étudiant (1968-1969, 1971-1983) et des Cahiers Linguistiques d'Ottawa (1971-1980). De plus, on y retrouve des photographies sur l'enseignement du français langue seconde dans une école technique secondaire, au Ghana.
