Administrative history
In August 1965, the University responded to an invitation from the National Arts Centre to examine its survey on the possibility of reviving a professional, full-time symphony orchestra in the National Capital region. The survey found such a project to be feasible provided that a school of music be established by an educational institution in the region. The University commissioned the author of the National Arts Centre survey, Louis Applebaum, to assess eastern Ontario's needs and ability to provide students for such a school. He was further instructed to advise on curriculum and staff requirements, and to provide a budget and a schedule of capital construction and equipment needs. Applebaum submitted his report on November 8, 1965 and the Senate struck the Committee to study the Applebaum Report on the same day. In its report to the Senate on December 6, 1965, the Committee recommended the creation of a department of music within the Faculty of Arts. The recommendation was accepted by the Senate and the Department of Music was inaugurated in 1969.
