Administrative history

The Department of Greek and Latin is established in 1957 in the Faculty of Arts. It changes its name to Department of Classical Studies in 1968. The Department is concerned with Greek and Roman Civilization, Greek and Latin Language and Literature, Linguistics, Ancient History, Art and Archaeology, Religion, Mythology and Philosophy. The Department participates in multi-disciplinary courses in Ancient and Medieval History. It is also involved in archaeological excavations at ancient sites in Italy and Greece. The Department offers a graduate programme leading to a M.A. and Ph.D. in Classical Studies. In 1996, the University decided to merge the Department of Classical Studies with the Department of Religious Studies to form the new Department of Classics and Religious Studies (Senate resolution 95-96.21).

Scope and content

The fonds contain files which document the functions of the Department of Classical Studies. It includes departmental minutes (1964-1971, 1973-1989), minutes of the Executive Committee (1980), minutes of the Teaching Staff Committee (1981-1988), documents of various committees, annual reports (1952-1963, 1965-1987), course outlines (1967-1987), exam questionnaires (1966-1973, 1987-1988, 1990-1992), student guidebooks (1971-1994), the bulletin Nuntius (1977-1990) and publications. After 1996, we can also find documents produced by the Religious studies section.

Restrictions: Documents containing confidential and personal information are restricted to consultation and reproduction.The records are submitted to the Copyright's Act.

Finding aids: Inventory of textual records.

Associated material: It is quite probable that documents from the Religious Studies section produced after 1996 were still filed in fonds 21 by error.

À partir de 1996, on y retrouve aussi les documents produits par la section des sciences des religions.
